Our Mission.
Cancer is a growing health problem in Nepal that causes suffering to individuals and their families and communities. The object of this association is to raise funds to reduce the burden of cancer on individuals and families in Nepal. An immediate identified need is to support children with retinoblastoma who require an eye prosthesis. Funds will be directed to the Nepal Cancer Relief Society to achieve these objects.
Children with retinoblastoma who have had their eye or eyes removed require an eye prosthesis as part of their recovery and to have a chance to resume a normal life. If they do not have a well fitted prosthesis, they may suffer facial disfigurement, social stigma and isolation. Many Nepalese families will not be able to afford a prosthetic eye, or if they do purchase an eye prosthesis for their child they will experience financial hardship. A high-quality eye prosthesis for these children produced in Nepal at the Tilgana Institute of Ophthalmology costs approximately $100USD. Funds raised by Open Eyes Global will be directed to the Nepal Cancer Relief Society to provide eye prostheses to these children free of charge.
The Nepal Cancer Relief Society is a non-profit community-based nationwide social organisation founded by Late Princess Jayanti Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah in 1982 with the aim of fighting against the spread of cancer in Nepal. The organisation has now established its branches in 42 districts of Nepal and has been mobilising 10,000 volunteers nationwide. The Nepal Cancer Relief Society is a member of the International Union Against Cancer (https://www.uicc.org/) that is based in Geneva and includes civil societies worldwide.
